Las Terrenas is located on the Samaná Peninsula in the north-east of the Dominican Republic. It is not served by a major international airport, but getting there is straightforward once you know the options. This guide covers every route — from all three main airports, by bus, by private transfer, and by car.

Nearest Airports to Las Terrenas

Airport

Code

Distance

Drive time

El Catey International (Samaná)

AZS

~45 km

~45 min

Las Américas (Santo Domingo)

SDQ

~215 km

~3 hrs

Punta Cana International

PUJ

~250 km

~3.5 hrs

Gregorio Luperón (Puerto Plata)

POP

~170 km

~2.5 hrs

Option 1: Fly into El Catey Airport (AZS) — Best Option

El Catey / Samaná International Airport (AZS) is the closest airport to Las Terrenas — approximately 45 minutes by road. Not all airlines serve AZS directly, but charter and seasonal flights operate from Europe and North America. Check availability before booking: if there is a direct flight to AZS, take it.

From AZS: take a pre-booked private transfer or taxi directly to Las Terrenas (~45 min, approx. USD 30–50).

Option 2: Fly into Santo Domingo (SDQ) — Most Flights

Las Américas Airport in Santo Domingo receives the most international flights. From SDQ to Las Terrenas:

Private transfer — the most comfortable option (~3 hrs, USD 80–120). Book in advance through your hotel or a reputable transfer company.

Public bus (caribe tours / metro) — take a bus to Sánchez or Samaná, then a local minibus (guagua) or taxi to Las Terrenas. Budget: USD 10–20. Journey: 3.5–4.5 hrs total.

Rental car — pick up at SDQ and drive via the Samaná Peninsula motorway. Straightforward if you are comfortable driving in the DR.

Option 3: Fly into Punta Cana (PUJ)

Punta Cana is the busiest airport in the DR but is on the opposite end of the island. The drive takes approximately 3.5–4 hours. Best reached by private transfer or rental car. Not the recommended entry point unless you are combining a Punta Cana stay with Las Terrenas.

Option 4: Fly into Puerto Plata (POP)

Puerto Plata has regular charter flights from Europe. The drive from POP to Las Terrenas takes approximately 2.5 hours via the north coast road (a scenic but winding route). Rental car or private transfer recommended.

Getting Around Las Terrenas

Once in Las Terrenas, local transport is easy and cheap:

Moto-taxi — the main way locals get around. Quick, cheap (50–150 DOP for short rides), available everywhere. Agree the price before you get on.

Rental scooter / motorbike — widely available in town, USD 20–35/day. Gives you full freedom to reach more remote beaches like Playa Coson and Playa Escondida.

Rental car — available but less practical for in-town use. Useful for day trips.

Walking — the town centre and beaches including Playa Poncho and Playa Punta Popy are walkable from the main hotel strip.

Practical Tips

Always carry some Dominican pesos (DOP) for local transport — moto-taxi drivers rarely accept cards or USD.

If renting a car, an international driving licence is technically required. Drive carefully on rural roads.

The Samaná Peninsula motorway from Santo Domingo is modern and fast — the most reliable route from SDQ.

Book private transfers in advance during high season (December–April) to guarantee availability on arrival.

Once you are in Las Terrenas, read our complete beaches guide to plan which beaches to visit — and check the best time to visit for weather and seasonal tips.

Las Terrenas has a tropical climate year-round, which means visiting at any time is possible. But there are clear differences between seasons that affect your experience on the beach, the cost of accommodation, and crowd levels. Here is an honest month-by-month guide based on local knowledge.

Quick Answer: Best Months to Visit

The best time to visit Las Terrenas is December to April (dry season). Sea conditions are ideal, rainfall is minimal, and the beaches are at their most beautiful. If you want fewer crowds and lower prices, May to August is an excellent shoulder-season alternative.

Month-by-Month Guide

December – April: Dry Season (Best for Beaches)

Weather: Warm (26–30°C), low humidity, little rain, consistent sunshine

Sea: Calm and clear — ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and water sports

Crowds: Peak season (especially Christmas, New Year, and February) — book accommodation early

Prices: Highest of the year

Highlight: January and February offer the best combination of dry weather and manageable crowds

This is the perfect time to visit Playa Poncho, Playa Bonita, and Playa Coson — conditions are consistently excellent.

May – August: Shoulder Season (Fewer Crowds, Good Value)

Weather: Hot (28–32°C), higher humidity, short afternoon showers most days

Sea: Warm and still good for swimming; occasional stronger currents after heavy rain

Crowds: Noticeably fewer tourists, especially May–June

Prices: 20–40% lower than peak season

Highlight: Lush green landscape; the Samaná Peninsula is at its most vibrant

July and August see some European visitors. May and June are the quietest and most affordable months — great for independent travellers on a budget.

September – November: Hurricane Season (Proceed with Caution)

Weather: Heavy rain, strong winds possible, hurricane risk (especially September–October)

Sea: Can be rough and unsafe for swimming; conditions change quickly

Crowds: Very low — most tourist facilities reduce hours or close temporarily

Prices: Lowest of the year

Note: Direct hurricane strikes on Las Terrenas are rare but not impossible — check forecasts and have travel insurance

Visiting in this period is possible but not recommended for a beach holiday. November improves noticeably and marks the transition back into dry season.

Temperature and Rainfall at a Glance

Month

Avg Temp (°C)

Rain Days

Beach Conditions

January

26

4

Excellent

February

26

4

Excellent

March

27

5

Excellent

April

28

7

Very good

May

29

10

Good

June

30

10

Good

July

31

10

Good

August

31

12

Good

September

30

16

Variable

October

29

17

Variable

November

28

12

Improving

December

27

6

Very good

Special Events Worth Planning Around

January/February: Humpback whale watching in Samaná Bay — a short trip from Las Terrenas and unmissable

February–March: Dominican Carnival — colourful and lively across the country

Easter (Semana Santa): Very busy; Dominican families fill the beaches — book early or expect crowds

Ready to Plan Your Visit?

Read our how to get to Las Terrenas guide for transport options, and our complete beaches guide to plan which beaches to visit during your stay.

Visit The United Doctors in Plaza de Paseo

The United Doctors is a medical practice that takes pride in providing the best possible service to our patients. We have a team of experienced and caring doctors who are always ready to help you with any health problems, from minor illnesses and injuries to chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease. Our goal is to provide convenient access for our patients no matter where they live or work—no referrals required! We have several locations throughout the city, including one right in Plaza de Paseo.

Primary Care.

Primary care is the first point of contact with a doctor. You may be referred to a primary care physician if you have a condition that requires regular monitoring, or if you need help managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure. Primary care physicians are generalists who can treat many conditions and refer patients to specialists as needed.

Walk-in Clinic.

The United Doctors is a walk-in clinic that offers the convenience of no appointment necessary, with flu shots available! We are open seven days a week and until 8pm on weekdays and 10pm on weekends. Come visit us at our convenient location in Plaza de Paseo, Las Terrenas!

Flu Shots.

Flu shots are available, free of charge and on a walk-in basis. They’re available during the work week and day, so if you’re in need of a flu shot, there’s no reason to hesitate. Flu shots are for everyone and will improve your health for the rest of the season!

Social Security Disability.

If you have been denied Social Security Disability benefits, we can help.

If you are unable to work because of a disabling condition and cannot return to your previous job, we can help determine whether or not you are eligible for disability benefits under Social Security. We will also assist you in filing an appeal if your initial application is denied.

Social Security may consider a substance use disorder (drug addiction or alcoholism) as a disability only when it results from another medical condition that meets their criteria for listing or appendix disorders (i.e., mental disorders). If the substance use disorder itself is severe enough to meet the listing criteria, then no other medical condition need be present. However, most people with substance use disorders do not qualify under this rule because they do not have any other medically supported impairments that would meet Social Security’s listings.

No Medical Insurance.

Have you been waiting to get a doctor’s appointment? Are you worried about the cost? Do you have medical insurance that covers only certain procedures?

We provide affordable health care for all. We are a non-profit, and we accept cash, credit cards, and checks.

We accept walk-ins and have flu shots available!

We have a walk-in clinic and we always accept walk-ins. We can also administer flu shots to our patients on the day of their visit!

What to do If you are bitten by dog

bitten by dog

Get medical attention

If you are bitten by a dog, you should get medical attention.

If the bite is severe and/or deep, you should go to the emergency room.

Keep the wound clean and bandaged

Keep the wound clean and bandaged.

If you see signs of infection, such as redness, swelling or pus discharge at the site of injury, consult a doctor immediately. In addition to this, if you have a fever (temperature above 38 degrees Celsius), go to the doctor unless it is accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea.

Look up what to do with the dog

If you were bitten by an animal, it’s important to take the following steps:

Contact animal control. If you do not know where the dog is or who owns it, contact your local animal control agency and give them as much information about the bite—the type of animal and its breed, for example—as possible. This will help them track down the dog and its owner.* Contact your insurance company and doctor immediately. You should also contact both if you are allergic or have another medical condition that requires immediate attention.* Contact your employer so that they can be aware of what happened in case any workplace safety issues arise from this incident (for example, being bit while on-site at work).

You dont have to panic.

If you are bitten by a dog, don’t panic.

The first thing to do is get medical attention. This will make sure that there are no infections or injuries, and also that you don’t need any vaccinations.

Keep the wound clean and bandaged until it heals up, but remember not to touch the bandage with your hands—use gloves instead! If all goes well, the dog bite should heal normally after about two weeks.

If you have been bitten by a dog, look up what kind of breed it was so that if someone asks later on in life whether or not they can own one themselves (which happens often), then at least now when someone says “I want a pit bull because they’re so cute!” You know how dangerous those things are because THEY ARE NOT CUTE AT ALL

There are a few things to keep in mind when you are bitten by a dog. First of all, if it happened recently and you have pain or swelling, go get medical attention right away. Second of

thing to remember is that dogs bite for many different reasons and there’s no telling why this particular one bit you (although it probably wasn’t because he doesn’t like his food). It may be because he has been provoked by something else happening around him or even just because he was protecting himself from being hurt when he thought someone was coming at him aggressively.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, we at the United Doctors of Plaza de Paseo are committed to providing you with the best care possible. We accept walk-ins and have flu shots available!
